Maximizing Learning with Ten Frames and Double Ten Frames in Math

When teaching early math concepts, ten frames and double ten frames (also known as twenty frames) are incredibly effective tools. They help young learners develop a strong number sense, visualize numbers, and understand operations like addition and subtraction. In this blog post, I’ll share practical ways to use these tools in your math lessons and showcase some engaging math mats to support your teaching.

What Are Ten Frames and Double Ten Frames?

A ten frame is a simple 2×5 grid, making it easy for students to visualize numbers up to 10. Double ten frames consist of two ten frames side by side, allowing for representations up to 20. These visual tools help students see patterns, make connections, and build foundational math skills.

Benefits of Using Ten Frames and Double Ten Frames

  1. Develops Number Sense: Students see numbers as groups of fives and tens, making counting, comparing, and understanding numbers easier.

  2. Promotes Subitizing: Children can recognize small groups of objects without counting each one, speeding up their number recognition.

  3. Supports Mental Math Strategies: Visualizing numbers on ten frames helps students with mental addition and subtraction.

  4. Builds Understanding of Place Value: Seeing numbers in groups of ten aids in understanding base ten concepts.

How to Use Ten Frames in the Classroom

1. Counting Practice

Start by having students place counters on the ten frames to represent different numbers. This hands-on activity reinforces counting and one-to-one correspondence.

2. Making Ten

Encourage students to find pairs of numbers that add up to ten. For example, place 7 counters on the frame and ask, “How many more do we need to make 10?”

3. Addition and Subtraction

Use ten frames to demonstrate simple addition and subtraction problems. Place counters to represent the first number, then add or remove counters to solve the problem.

4. Comparing Numbers

Ask students to use two ten frames to show different numbers and compare them. This helps reinforce greater than, less than, and equal concepts.

Using Double Ten Frames for Numbers Beyond Ten

1. Visualizing Teen Numbers

Students often struggle with understanding numbers between 10 and 20. Double ten frames help by showing these numbers as ten plus additional ones.

2. Exploring Place Value

Use double ten frames to show numbers like 12 as “1 ten and 2 ones.” This hands-on experience makes abstract concepts more concrete.

3. Practicing Addition and Subtraction to 20

Double ten frames are perfect for practicing addition and subtraction within 20. Show problems like 14 + 3 by filling one ten frame and partially filling the second frame.

Creating and Writing Equations with Ten Frames

Many ten frame and double ten frame mats include designated spaces for students to practice writing equations. This activity reinforces mathematical operations and supports a deeper understanding of number relationships.

1. Representing Equations

After placing counters on the frame, students can write corresponding addition or subtraction equations in the provided boxes. For example, if a student places 6 counters in a ten frame and 4 in the second, they can write the equation 6 + 4 = 10.

Encourage students to explore different ways to decompose numbers using ten frames. If showing 10, they might represent it as 5 + 5, 7 + 3, or 9 + 1, reinforcing flexible thinking about numbers.
