How it works:

  2. Tap out the sounds (or smash the sounds using playdough)
  3. Build the sounds using letters or writing with a dry erase marker
  4. Write the word on the handwriting line
  5. Check their answers on the back of the mat

This orthographic mapping resource provides engaging hands-on learning practicing CVC A words. Its quick prep will make it easy for you to provide a game-like activity where your students are truly learning to spell words. It also promotes vocabulary for your students with 40 different pictures, some with multi-meaning words. Start with this in your small groups and easily add it to centers. Your students will be successful because they have already practiced in small groups.

Your students will love sounding out, encoding, building, and spelling words. Your students will be convinced they are playing a game! Who doesn’t love to spin a spinner?;) If you’re feeling really fancy add in some play dough to smash the sounds instead of tap the sounds! ✨

Prep is quick and easy! Just print the mats front and back, print out the accountability sheets and that’s it! You can laminate the word mapping mats or use sheet protectors.

FAQ:

How do I print front and back?

  • Your printer must be able to print front and back
  • I’ve included picture instructions for using Adobe acrobat.
  • If your printer does not have the front/back function you can still print front and back
    • You will need to reinsert your word mats to print on the back side.
    • Insert the paper according to what your printer shows.
    • If you’re not sure, you may want to print a black and white version on plain paper to test it out before printing in color. (Been there many times) This will save you ink and heartache if you ruin card stock. (That stuff is like gold) ✨

What if I don’t want to/can’t print in color?

  • I’ve included black and white versions of all mats
  • Use colored card stock or thick paper for best printing
  • Sometimes I prefer colored card stock over color
    • You can color code your skills for each week (I use the colors of the rainbow and repeat.) It can help you stay organized.

What can I use if I don’t have spinners?

  • A paperclip and a pencil work just fine
  • I prefer to use that most of the time
  • You can use stirring sticks from the dollar tree to spin the paperclips.

What if students don’t know what a picture is?

  • I’ve included an answer key to help with any uncertainties
  • Each mat has a self checking sheet you can print to the back of each mat
